Intern/Volunteers - A Stay at our Farm
Welcome! That is the way we want you to feel when you decide to volunteer/intern at Farm On Kitchen Branch.
Dwight and I are pretty laid back, kinda slow moving oldsters, who are just trying to get through each day and enjoy ourselves as much as possible.
For a woman who had a plan of retiring at 50, (found out that didn't work), I think I am doing pretty well. I really miss the old days, when life on the farm was very laid back. With the help of you WWOOFers, Help Exchange, and Workaway volunteers, I really hope to bring some of that back. I used to be a great cook, but the past few years, hubby claims my meals are many times the latest great mystery or burnt offerings. All this because the fire alarm would go off on occasion. He says "that's the dinner bell" The alarm hasn't gone off in quite a while now, (I climbed on a chair and swiped the battery out of the thing.) Anyway, I digress, I want this page to be an overview of what you can expect with a stay at our farm, so please read on...

Accommodations:
We always want to know how comfy things are going to be, or at least I do. You will not be staying in our home this season, because we have to renovate the basement into a bunkhouse. That should not sound too bad, as we lived in the basement for the first seven years while we were building the house. However, rest assured you will be comfortable with your sleeping arrangements.
- Fold out sofa bed
- Bunk beds and/or cots
- Bathroom with shower, not attached
- Kitchen privileges, I really don't have much time for cooking, though I do make the effort once in a while, we don't starve.
- Laundry privileges, we furnish the soaps, etc
- TV, sometimes cable, sometimes not, hello country living
- High speed internet
- Telephone service for continental U.S. telephone calls only using Magic Jack
What We Ask of You
Be showered and have your breakfast taken care of by 8:00am, we don't start the day very early, but during the summer hours it is best to get it over with in the morning. The 8:00am may turn into 7:00am as summer progresses. You must be responsible about this, because reliability is very important to us. If we have issues with your ability to be punctual, you will be required to leave.
- Be willing and pleasant, we never ask someone to do something that we can't or won't do ourselves.
- Be clean about yourself, and clean up after yourself. At all times, your personal area must be maintained in a clean and organized manner. If sharing space with another, you are required to keep your items put away.
- No drugs, alcohol, or anything else some people seem to be into. Your body is a temple, you should honor that. If you don't, and it is illegal, you will find out what the inside of our fairly new county jail is like.
What You Can Expect From Us.
We don't work hard anymore, because we can't, so the work day will sometimes be short, and sometimes be around six hours.
We run two businesses and manage two nonprofits besides our farm, so our life is a little "on the go", you will be welcome and encouraged to tag along and assist us in anything we are doing. Working in or on our kennels will count as your hours as well as any actual farm work we are doing.
I train service dogs, and you will be encouraged to grab a rescue and join a class anytime I have one going on. Of course Dog Trainer or Management Interns will be immersed in dog training as part of their career training.
We don't run around much, because we are country folk, so a stay with us will be mostly hanging out at the farm, meeting our neighbors and relatives, etc. We will endeavor to find people your own age who may be willing to include you in things they have going on. Other than that, there is always hiking in the mountains, and many other things, please see the "Area Attractions" page.
