Farm on Kitchen Branch
Hello! We are so very blessed to be living on a farm that was founded by my husbands great-great-great grandfather in 1809. The history of this area of the Appalachian Mountains is extremely rich.
We have been farming the land since 1978. Back then the crops were hay, tobacco and cattle.
We now raise a small blueberry patch that just doesn't want to cooperate, we have a small orchard, and still with the cattle and haying.
We are now, actively going back into our gardening and will be raising vegetable crops which will partially be sold through our local farmers market this summer. I serve on the board of this very important addition to our community that helps to make it possible for all the area small farmers to bring their produce to market locally.
Many of our local restaurants want fresh, homegrown organic produce for their own use, and we are excited to be able to participate in this as well.
This year we will be raising a very large sweet corn patch, along with another garden, and like last year, doing this all organically.
We have a strong belief that pesticides in any form are torturing our land and our bodies, and the only way to save ourselves is to produce as much of our own food as possible.
We will also be raising rabbits and chickens this year for our own use, as well as a very small commercial venture.
Becoming self supporting and self sustaining is very important to us.
